Seymour, Indiana, US-based bioplastics maker Cereplast on 10 February filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code. The company said it made the move "to strengthen its balance sheet, clean up its capitalisation structure and gain financial flexibility as it continues to realign its operations." 18 February 2014
Canadian automotive supplier Magna International is exploring potential automotive applications for a bioplastic made from by-products of sugar production.

A Chinese firm is obtaining technology from Czech Republic to produce PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) biopolymer from China’s abundant waste cooking oil and make biodegradable food packaging out of the material. 14 February 2014
German compounder Polymer-Chemie has linked up with Resysta International to develop new ‘green’ processing products with a rice-based material for the main markets of Eastern Europe. 5 February 2014
A system whereby plastic irrigation pipes and green waste can be composted together at the end of a crop-growing period is the subject of a European cross-border research project. 10 January 2014

The IKT Institute of Plastics Technology at Stuttgart University exhibited at a K show for the first time at the 2013 event in Düsseldorf, Germany in October, in the “Science Campus” area of the fair focusing on lightweight construction and bioplastics themes.
