Brazil's Braskem SA, the leading thermoplastic resins producer in the Americas and the world's largest biopolymers producer, inaugurated a new research and development centre on 6 June that will focus on renewable chemical products, with as much as BRL 30m (€10m) in funding available for its projects this year. 10 June 2014

Magna International, the Canada-based automotive parts supplier and contract manufacturer, has signed a cooperation agreement with Italian intellectual property company Bio-On. The two firms are to start exclusive R&D activities on the use of bioplastics in the automotive industry. 14 March 2014

Bioplastics firm Novamont SpA has acquired a majority stake in Mater-Biopolymer, a unit of PET resin maker Grupo Mossi & Ghisolfi that operates a resin plant in Lazio, Italy. 4 March 2014
Seymour, Indiana, US-based bioplastics maker Cereplast on 10 February filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code. The company said it made the move "to strengthen its balance sheet, clean up its capitalisation structure and gain financial flexibility as it continues to realign its operations." 18 February 2014
Canadian automotive supplier Magna International is exploring potential automotive applications for a bioplastic made from by-products of sugar production.
