The German plastics processing industry yet again set a new record in 2013 as turnover grew by 3% to €57.6bn, exceeding modest 0.5% growth in 2012. The GKV trade association said activity in December exceeded expectations and it is forecasting faster growth of 4-5% in 2014.

Germany-based Windmöller & Höllscher (W&H) unveiled its new generation blown film extrusion line at K 2013 in Düsseldorf last October. Nicknamed “Code E-24” before its K debut, the line was revealed as Varex II. The new Varex has sculptural surfaces, with few exposed parts and new W&H roundels, apparently inspired by the engineers’ fondness for a certain Bavarian automotive marque. The Varex II’s improvements are more than skin deep, however.

BOPP film manufacturer Treofan is investing around €30m in a new production plant for five-layer film at its Neunkirchen facility in Germany. Treofan said it aims to produce approximately 1 billion square metres of 8.7-metre film per year at the plant, starting from mid-2015 after the building has been constructed.

Polish manufacturer Gamrat has signed a term sheet document with France’s flooring producer Tarkett as part of its efforts to sell the company’s PVC flooring division Gamrat Flooring. The French company aims to purchase a 100% stake in Gamrat Flooring, Lentex, Gamrat’s parent company, said in a statement.

US manufacturer Amphenol is aiming to invest €6m in setting up a new cable plant in Kocani, in Macedonia’s eastern region. The production facility’s output will be supplied to producers from the automotive industry, reported local news agency MINA.

Uponor, the Finnish manufacturer of plastic pipe and indoor climate equipment, announced on 22 January that it was withdrawing its sales and profit forecasts for 2013 due to Q4 problems at its French subsidiary. The company cited the cancellation during Q4 of official French approval of a "central product system, leading to a drop in sales".
