Netherlands-based Royal DSM, a life sciences and materials sciences company, has announced it is forming a joint venture with Chinese materials company NHU. The new venture called DSM NHU Engineering Plastics, in which DSM will hold a 60% share and NHU a 40% share, will be located in Zhejiang, China. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed. 21 May 2015

Part of a unit making plastics feedstocks ethylene and propylene was impacted by a 10 May fire at a Shell Chemical oil refinery and chemicals plant in Wesseling, Germany. A Shell spokeswoman confirmed 12 May that a fire broke out in a furnace at the site at around 2:20 p.m. 10 May and was extinguished shortly after 9 p.m. that same day. She added that no injuries were reported.

German plastic producers faced a tough market in 2014. However, German plastics producers “have shown the industry to be robust, despite a difficult market background, in which initial optimism was replaced by some gloom in the course of the year”, Dr Josef Ertl, chairman of the PlasticsEurope Deutschland trade association, stated at a 7 May briefing on the industry’s 2014 results. 12 May 2015
