The European Commission has approved France-based chemical company Arkema’s acquisition of French oil and gas giant Total’s adhesives and sealants business Bostik. 30 January 2015
Dow Chemical delivered modest sales growth in 2014, but the firm’s profit took a tumble. The Midland, Michigan, US-based plastics and chemicals giant Dow Chemical rang up sales of almost $58.2bn (€51.3bn) in 2014 — up almost 2% — but profit slid 20% to just over $1.4bn (€1.24bn). 30 January 2015
The ongoing slide in crude oil prices is taking commodity resin prices down as well. North American prices for all grades of polyethylene, polypropylene, suspension PVC and solid polystyrene each dropped in January. Prices for crude oil have fallen more than 50% since mid-2014, affecting prices for feedstocks used to make these resins. 30 January 2015

Materials giant DuPont will use almost all of the proceeds from an upcoming spinoff — one that includes its fluoropolymer and titanium dioxide businesses — to fund a massive $4bn (€3.5bn) stock buyback. Officials with Wilmington, Delaware, US-based DuPont announced the move on 27 January as the firm released full-year financial results for 2014. 28 January 2015
A major Siberian polymers project, ZapSibNeftekhim, planned by the Russian petrochemicals group Sibur, could be in line for a big injection of state funding through the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF). The equity investment fund, set up by the government in 2011 as a catalyst for direct investment into Russia, may spend $3.5bn (€3.09bn) from the National Wealth Fund and raise hundreds of millions of dollars from other investors to back Sibur’s scheme for a 2 million tpa polyolefins complex. 27 January 2015

Following the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluding there is no health risk to consumers of any age group from current exposure levels to Bisphenol A (BPA), associations around the world have come forward to support its findings. PlasticsEurope’s PC/BPA group has stated that following the EFSA’s conclusions the French restriction on BPA is disproportionate and should be withdrawn. 22 January 2015

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded there is no health risk to consumers of any age group from current exposure levels to bisphenol A (BPA) after it completed a comprehensive evaluation of data. “Exposure from the diet or from a combination of sources (diet, dust, cosmetics and thermal paper) is considerably under the safe level (the “tolerable daily intake” or TDI),” said EFSA in a statement. 21 January 2015
