Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) has announced that it has bought composite materials specialist Thermoplast Composite (TCG) based near Nuremberg, Germany. The price of the acquisition was not revealed. 3 March 2015
Bayer Group's total sales for 2014 stood at €42.2bn up 5.2% from €40.1bn in 2013, while the MaterialScience subgroup of Bayer (BMS) achieved sales of €11.7bn during 2014, it was announced at the company’s financial press conference on 26 February 2015. Marijn Dekkers, chairman of the board of management, said BMS' 2014 sales were up 5% on 2013 due to higher volumes and a slight fall in overall selling prices.   3 March 2015

Borealis, the Austria-headquartered chemicals giant, announced record annual net profits, numbers the group said were boosted by improved margins in its olefins and polyolefins operation. The company reported net sales of €8.33bn in 2014, up from €8.11bn in 2013. Net profits for 2014 were €517m, up 35% on 2013's profits of €423m.

Chemicals giant BASF said today it had achieved its goal for 2014, increasing earnings, “despite the disappointing economic development in Europe, following the publication of its latest financial figures”. Overall, sales were up 0.5% to €74.3bn, with earnings before interest and tax and special items (Ebit) up 4.0% to €7.4bn. Kurt Bock, chairman of the board of executive directors of BASF, said: “The outlook for the 2015 business year is subject to significant uncertainty." 27 February 2015
Solvay, the Belgium-headquartered chemicals giant, has reported a near-9% rise in fourth quarter net sales and annual turnover up 5% year-on-year. 27 February 2015
Azelis, the specialty chemicals distributor, is being sold by its private equity owners 3i to another private investment outfit, Apax Partners, for an undisclosed sum. 3i and funds managed by the firm bought a majority stake in Azelis eight years ago, since when it said the group had grown both organically and through acquisitions across the UK, the Benelux countries, Central and Eastern Europe. 26 February 2015
Italy’s Tekni‐Plex Europe, a subsidiary of US-based Tekni‐Plex, has announced that its plan to acquire Gallazzi’s Italian‐based pharmaceutical blister film and adhesive tape substrate film businesses has been approved by Italian authorities. 25 February 2015

Solvay, the Brussels, Belgium-based chemicals group, has announced that it is building a new speciality polymers unit in the US, expanding its capacity of PEEK (polyether etherketone). The new unit is to be built at Solvay’s Specialty Polymers site in Augusta, Georgia, US, and is expected to come on stream in mid-2016. 24 February 2015
