Chemicals giant Ineos has confirmed reports that it is planning to be the biggest player in the UK shale gas industry. The Switzerland-headquartered firm’s intended $1bn (€800m) investment would lead to shale gas exploration and production in the UK. 21 November 2014
Turkish petrochemical group Petkim has completed the expansion of its ethylene plant in Aliağa, in Turkey’s western Izmir province. 21 November 2014
Evertis, a PET film maker, is expanding production at plants in Mexico, Brazil and Portugal, the company said. 21 November 2014
France-based oil and gas giant Total has signed an agreement to purchase a 68% stake in German Polyblend, a subsidiary of Polymer-Chemie, a Total spokesperson told EPN. Total says it doesn’t currently produce the type of reinforced polyolefin compounds made by Polyblend, but two production lines with a total capacity of 30,000 tonnes per year are being built on Total’s Carling, Lorraine, France site with the aim to start in Spring 2016. 20 November 2014

Lithuanian plastics producer Neo Group is planning to relaunch its production facility in Klaipeda, in Lithuania’s western part. 19 November 2014
Tasma, an 80-year-old Russian producer of technical industrial films which supported the USSR war effort during World War II, has assumed a new role as an extruder of barrier food packaging film. 19 November 2014

Representatives of the European Parliament and the European Union’s (EU) Council of Ministers agreed on a provisional deal last night (17 November) to reduce the use of lightweight plastic bags in the EU. However, the agreement has to be confirmed in unanimity by EU member states’ top diplomats meeting in the so-called ‘Coreper’ committee on Friday, 21 November. 18 November 2014
Germany-based chemicals giant BASF has announced that it has completed the sale of its 50% share in Styrolution, a global styrenics supplier, to Switzerland-based Ineos.  18 November 2014
