Essentra, the UK-based plastic packaging group, has announced that one of its subsidiaries has bought the Specialist Packaging Division (SPD) of the private equity-owned Clondalkin Group, the Netherlands-based packaging firm. The acquisition – the largest in Essentra’s history – values the Clondalkin SPD operation at approximately $455m (€365m) and would boost its presence in the pharmaceutical and healthcare packaging markets, particularly in North America and Europe.

West Pharmaceutical Services has announced a major investment in a new manufacturing facility in Waterford, Ireland, which has been described as “a massive boost” by Enda Kenny, the Irish Taoiseach (prime minister). The facility will initially produce packaging components for insulin injector cartridges and other packaging components. Following a later expansion, the plant eventually could employ 250 to 300 people and will involve a total investment in the range of €100m, the US group said.
