The European Commission has published a final opinion from an expert committee on whether plastics additive bisphenol A (BPA) is safe to use in medical devices – the conclusion: yes, in most cases. Only with the use of plastic devices for new born babies is there a risk of contamination that might pose health problems, concluded the European Union (EU) Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR).

Greiner, the Austria-based plastic packaging and foams producer, has announced that sales in its 2014 fiscal year were 2% higher at €1.32bn. "Strategic alignment with our core competencies and expansion into new markets are our engine for growth," said CEO Axel Kühner. Most of Greiner’s divisions grew according to plan, with the exception of Greiner Tool.Tec, which faced difficult market conditions.

Contract manufacturing giant Flextronics International is officially launching Precision Plastics, a global injection tooling and manufacturing unit, as a part of its High Reliability Solutions business segment. The program, making its debut at NPE 2015, comprises four mould makers and three moulding operations that Flextronics has acquired over the past 18 months. Officials say the move allows diversification but is also complementary to the market segments in which it currently operates, such as medical devices.

US-based compounder Teknor Apex has introduced a rigid PVC to replace polycarbonate (PC) in clear medical components such as connectors and check valves. It claims the new material has comparable strength and clarity while reducing or eliminating the stress cracking that often occurs in PC at the interface with flexible PVC components such as tubing.
