Private equity firm Onex Corp is set to acquire SIG Combibloc Group, the Switzerland-based manufacturer of aseptic carton packaging and plastics closures, for up to €3.75bn. SIG, which operates seven facilities globally, had turnover of €1.68bn in 2013, and has 5,200 employees. 24 November 2014
Polish manufacturer Grupa Kęty has unveiled plans to build a new production facility in Kęty, in Poland’s southern part. The investment is estimated to be worth about 150m zloty (€35.5m), the company said in a statement. 24 November 2014
Representatives of European Union (EU) member states hammered out a deal last Friday to reduce consumption of lightweight plastic bags to 40 bags a year by 2025. National governments will have to either reduce average lightweight plastic bags consumption to 90 bags per person per year by 2019 and 40 by 2025 or ensure that, by 2018, all bags are charged for. 24 November 2014
Baltic States flexible packaging producer Polipaks is investing €28.5m to construct a new production plant in Latvia capable of turning out 9-layer barrier film and laminates.  20 November 2014
Polish manufacturer Plastica has unveiled plans to invest at least PLN 20.5m (€4.9m) in expanding its production facility in Kowalewo Pomorskie, in Poland’s northern region of Pomorskie.  20 November 2014

Essentra, the UK-based plastic packaging group, has announced that one of its subsidiaries has bought the Specialist Packaging Division (SPD) of the private equity-owned Clondalkin Group, the Netherlands-based packaging firm. The acquisition – the largest in Essentra’s history – values the Clondalkin SPD operation at approximately $455m (€365m) and would boost its presence in the pharmaceutical and healthcare packaging markets, particularly in North America and Europe. 12 November 2014
Australian packaging company Amcor is developing its own films that do not use Barex resin in the wake of an announcement its Barex supplier will close its factory in Lima, Ohio, in the US, early next year. In the meantime, the company is working on a deal with the supplier, Ineos Group, for a continued source of Barex-brand polyacrylonitrile (PAN) resin to meet its customers’ needs for the next three years. 12 November 2014
Canadian mould-maker StackTeck Systems is investing in new machining equipment and beefing up its pilot cell for in-mould labelling (IML). 12 November 2014
APPE, part of bankrupt Spanish PET group La Seda de Barcelona, has been acquired by Plastipak Packaging for €360m. The US packaging company Plastipak submitted a sealed bid for the company along with two other bidders (European PET container maker Petainer and US-based Anchorage investment fund) on the 29 October. 6 November 2014
Sonoco, the US-based packaging giant, has completed its acquisition of Weidenhammer Packaging Group. 4 November 2014
