Representatives of the European Parliament and the European Union’s (EU) Council of Ministers agreed on a provisional deal last night (17 November) to reduce the use of lightweight plastic bags in the EU. However, the agreement has to be confirmed in unanimity by EU member states’ top diplomats meeting in the so-called ‘Coreper’ committee on Friday, 21 November. 18 November 2014
The UK government has been accused of trying to block agreement over European Union (EU) legislation curbing lightweight plastic bags usage to favour a UK plastics company with close links to David Cameron's Conservative Party. A Danish Green member of the European Parliament (MEP) Margrete Auken made the claims ahead of an important ‘trialogue’ meeting today (17 November). 17 November 2014

Berndorf, a city in Austria, has made shopping more environmentally friendly by introducing the Berndorf Bag, a bag constructed from woven plastic. The bag was developed by Austrian technology supplier Starlinger & Co under the product name CB*star for the campaign ‟I shop in Berndorf”. 14 October 2014

A set of new guidelines covering design-for-recycling for PET trays has been published by Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), the Brussels-based trade body. PRE hopes to build a value chain for PET trays similar to that operating in the PET bottle sector. 25 September 2014

Sita, the Netherlands based recycling and waste-to-energy unit of French water treatment and waste management company Suez Environment, has acquired the recycling activities of the Houweling Group  (which focuses on the international trade in containers, transport and warehousing).   11 September 2014
