Following the European Commission’s waste review proposal to promote a circular economy, including a ban on burying recyclables in landfills by 2025, European plastics and packaging organisations have given their reactions. Brussels-based Europen, the European organisation for packaging and the environment, supports the proposal but says it regrets the lack of clarity of roles and unjustified cost burden on producers.

The European Commission has announced that it has adopted proposals, including a landfill ban for recyclable materials, to turn Europe into a more circular economy and boost recycling. The new waste targets for EU members call for 70% of municipal waste and 80% of packaging waste to be recycled by 2030.
