More than 70% of China’s plastics recycling companies have left the industry over the past three years, taking hundreds of thousands of jobs away, according to Zhou Kaiqing.

Austria-based recycling technology company Erema has announced that it hit record figures with its annual sales for the fiscal year of 2014/15, reporting €115m in sales, an increase of 21% and €20m on the previous year. The sales for the group (including Erema, Pure Loop and 3S) stood at €130m for the year.

European Union (EU) countries will be required to reduce the use of the commonest and most polluting plastic bags under new rules voted by the Parliament on Tuesday. Member states will be able to choose either to take measures to reduce annual average consumption of non-biodegradable plastic bags to 90 lightweight bags per citizen by the end of 2019 and 40 by the end of 2025 or ensure that by the end of 2018, no more light plastic bags are handed over free of charge to shoppers.

Responding to a new report about plastic waste in the marine environment, trade body PlasticsEurope said there were currently nearly 200 industry projects in place to tackle the problem.
