Fire seriously damaged a section of the production plant of Spanish automotive parts injection moulder Ubiplast in an industrial zone of the central city of Burgos.
No one was injured in the overnight blaze last week (26 April) which destroyed one of the site’s three main halls containing offices, a tooling workshop and a small storage area housing moulded plastic product samples. The main structure of the building was engulfed in flames and the roof collapsed.
Swift action by fire fighters prevented the blaze from spreading to the plant’s other buildings housing highly flammable raw materials, moulds and the main production hall, reported the Burgos daily newspaper Diario de Burgos.
Workers on the night shift at Ubiplast were alerted to the fire by staff at a neighbouring factory in the early hours of the morning and the 16 employees on duty were evacuated from moulding plant.
Fire fighters had the blaze under control in less than three hours and the following day, once power was restored to the plant, production resumed. Police are still investigating the cause of the fire, the local daily reported.
Ubiplast, employing 60, is one of five injection moulding, mould making and assembly operations in Grupo Ubiplast manufacturing automotive and other industrial components and products.
Three moulding subsidiaries: Ubiplast and Icaplast and Fabricantes de Equipos de Riego (Faber), which makes irrigation products, have plants in Burgos’s industrial zone. Also, here is the parts assembly business of Ubimanufacturados, while the fifth group unit is Plásticos Inyectados Bergara (Plaiber) located in Bergara in Spain’s Basque Country.
Founded in 1978, the group, which employs in all 130, occupies 8,200m² of production space and operates 45 injection moulding machines ranging from 60 to 650 tonnes. Eighty per cent of the its business is automotive component production although it also serves the white goods, electrical and electronic products and household goods sectors.
Ubiplast group customers include the international suppliers such as Magna, Robert Bosch, Grupo Antolin, Ficosa International and Maier, and it has an annual turnover of €15m. In five years, the group has raised domestic sales by 50% and tripled exports to the European Union and elsewhere, the firm reports.
