Packaging carton manufacturer SIG Combiblock is investing €36m in a new extrusion line, to laminate cardboard with a polymer coating, at its Brazilian plant.
The investment will allow the firm to laminate unprocessed cardboard for its own brand aseptic carton packs on-site. The polymer layer will build a liquid barrier for the product, keeping moisture out, says the company.
After the coating has been applied, the packaging material is printed, cut to size, stamped and sealed.
South America is one of the most important markets for the company, which is part of the New Zealand-based Rank Group. By the end of 2012, SIG Combibloc South America recorded growth of more than 60% compared to the previous year.
