Limagrain Céréales Ingrédients (LCI) has introduced Biolice 50T, a new grade of biodegradable plastic for thermoforming applications.

The material, a blend of maize cereal flour and two different biodegradable polyesters, processes well, says LCI. The material’s levels of stiffness are close to that of traditional alternatives, while the material is less brittle than either PS or PLA, the company claims.

According to the company, the resin has a natural fit in the horticultural market and is also likely to find applications in disposable and single use food trays.

Biolice says the material can be extruded into mono- or multi-layer sheet in the thickness range of 0.3 to 2mm, using calendering or chill roll extrusion. The company also says packaging produced using ht meets the requirements of the EN13432 compostable packaging standard up to a thickness of 0.45mm.
