French car-maker Renault announced today (5 July) that its gull-wing door electrically-powered DeZir two seat concept car features a composite body designed around DuPont's Kevlar aramid fibre.

Dupont’s Kevlar aramid fibre has been selected as a weight-saving reinforcement material for the DeZir’s “fire red” composite bodywork. The design concept is to mount the composite body structure onto a tubular steel space frame, similar to that used today for the Mégane Trophy racing car.

Renault has revealed no specific details on how such a Kevlar reinforced body would be produced. However, the company says the design weight of the DeZir is 830kg.

Developed for Renault as the first in a series of concept cars by designer Laurens van den Acker, the DeZir has no rear windscreen. That body space is occupied by two rear-view cameras.

The DeZir concept will be shown to the public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show, which runs from 2-17 October 2010.
