The Italian plastics and rubber machinery industry saw improvement in 2014, according to trade association Assocomaplast, which released annual figures in a statement headed “The sector is healthy: signs all positive in 2014”. The value of production for Italian plastics and rubber machinery, equipment and moulds improved by 2.6% from €3.90bn in 2013 to €4.00bn in 2014, according to estimates based on information from the group’s member companies. One-third of member companies are optimistic about 2015.

Thermoforming machinery manufacturer Illig received more than 250 visitors to its open house, which took place at its facility in Heilbronn, Germany on 29 and 30 October. Participants from across Europe heard presentations and saw demonstrations of Illig’s technology, such as automatic pressure forming machines of the RDKP series for separate forming and punching, as well as the RDK series for combined forming-punching operation.

Robert Bosch is set to pay €3bn and take full control of Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte (BSH), its joint venture with Siemens which is Europe’s largest manufacturer of appliances, including washing machines, refrigerators, ovens and vacuum cleaners. BSH is a significant producer of plastic components for its products and it operates 41 factories in 13 countries in Europe, the US, Latin America and Asia.

The German plastics processing industry yet again set a new record in 2013 as turnover grew by 3% to €57.6bn, exceeding modest 0.5% growth in 2012. The GKV trade association said activity in December exceeded expectations and it is forecasting faster growth of 4-5% in 2014.

Peacock is a chair for indoor or outdoor use made from DuPont’s Corian acrylic composite. It is designed by Eiri Ota and Irene Gardpoit Chan from Toronto, Canada-based architecture firm UUfie. The acrylic composite sheet is thermoformed and then manually manipulated into shape.

Sekisui Alveo and Mergon Automotive have started a joint project to develop polyolefin foam air ducts for the automotive industry. The two companies will develop a special thermoforming process for producing ducts from foamed plastics as an alternative to existing methods: extrusion blow moulding and injection moulding.

Belgian plastic and rubber products association Federplast.be has appointed Petri Ven as its new secretary general. He will take on the new role in January 2014 when the current secretary general, Geert Scheys, steps down. Four years ago Ven joined Essenscia, the Belgian federation of the chemical industry, which delegated him to Federplast.be as its senior advisor for building and standardisation.
